The Pono Kai takes reservations up to a year in advance. If you want to get a certain floor or building it is always best to book as soon as you can to get the best choice. The most popular times are when school is out so if you need those dates, plan early. December is a month that always books fast and January through March is popular because that is whale watching season. Remember January through March can also be the rainiest months but that is why Kauai is so lush and has great waterfalls. Some of the best months to visit are September and October, although September can be hotter but airfares can be cheaper.
