We were at the Pono Kai from 10-11-14 to 10-25-14 and if some of you were following the news, we did have a close call with hurricane Ana. Luckily she did take a northwesterly path and missed Kauai by a couple hundred miles. We only felt the affects with heavy wind and rain on Saturday night. These photos were of the beautiful skies during our first week. We had some friends with us during the first week so we visited some places we've been to plus a few other stops we have never made. Be sure to watch the blog as I will be posting new photos in the coming weeks and months. We already have our reservations and airfare set for our return in May 2015.

I do have a week available at the Imperial Waikiki. It is in a perfect location to explore all of beautiful Waikiki and Oahu. This would be great for anyone who wants to visit both Oahu and Kauai. Weeks can be booked back to back so you can island hop and enjoy two islands in two weeks. Click "booking Your Rental" or "Contact Us" if you have any questions.
I just returned from another great visit to the Pono Kai. I wanted to do some blog posts while I was there but I had issues with my App so I wasn't able to do any posting. I have may pictures and posts I will blog about when I get the app running and go through and organize my pictures. I have most of them on my IPad but the app is still not working. Tech support says in a week or so, we'll see. In the mean time I will try to get some posted off my desktop. If anyone has any questions about certain places or activities please let me know and I will add them to the blog. When planning our trips to Kauai, we always reserve our rental cars as soon as we have dates nailed down. I check both Discount Hawaii Car Rental and Costco the I book them cheapest one. After that I continue to rebook and cancel, whenever the price goes down. For our upcoming trip 10-11-14 to 10-25-14, I first booked last November. We need a full size car this time because we are taking friends and the cheapest at that time was $760 total with all taxes and fees. I just rebooked today for $315 total for the same car and duration. I canceled and rebooked about six times over that time period and it has dropped over $150 in the last week. I don't expect it to drop much if any more but I'll keep checking. 😄 This one's easy, anytime you can go. 😄Kauai really is an all year destination. Summer time is great for water sports Because the ocean is calmer during the summer. Just keep in mind that school is out so there are more crowds everywhere. It will be a little warmer but the breezes help and don't worry the Pono Kai has air conditioning. The winter has more rain but if your escaping snow and cold like me a little rain is nice plus the whales are around and they are always fun to see. Crowds tend to be a little older as there are many snowbirds and schools are in session. Temps will be a little cooler but can still get in the 80's. The extra rain will help the waterfalls flow freely. Spring and fall are considered shoulder seasons but are great times to visit. It may be a little less crowded because the snowbirds aren't there and schools are still in session so there aren't many families either. Flights and car rentals can be a little cheaper also. This is a top floor one bedroom end unit. These are some of the first units to book because of the extra light that comes in from the side. You also get a great view from the lanai. You get the best sunrises from your lanai at the Pono Kai.
As you can see by these photos of the lobby of the Coco Palms, years of neglect Will be a major hurdle to overcome to bring this once beautiful resort back to life. They are starting to work cleaning up the grounds and major construction sounds like it will be beginning next year. If you plan a trip to Kauai make sure you stop by and take the Coco Palms tour so you can follow along with the renovations online. I'm glad I took the your before the renovations began. I only wish I could have see this resort during it's prime. Without these displays it would be hard to tell it's Chritmas time while your on Kauai. These displays were in the mall in Hanalei. If you want to see some nice sunsets, you'll have to make the trip to Polihale Beach Park. As I've said before, there is no road that goes all the way around the island. If you go north you'll turn around at Ke'e beach and if you south from the Pono Kai you'll end up at Polihale. The last 5 miles are on a pretty rough stretch of road. Some pretty big potholes and it would be really muddy after a rain. We had a Jeep on our last trip so we went all the way to the beach. I did see some cars there and as long as it's dry you should be fine if you take your time but a Jeep will make you feel more comfortable. You may want to check with your car rental company, there may be a restriction about going here so if you would run into a problem, you could be on your own. I never did check to see if the was any cell service there. It is a beautiful beach and you can see the island of Ni'ihau. Ni'ihau is the home of the famed lei makers of the Ni'ihau shell leis. There are some tables and toilets at the beach so you can enjoy a lunch or dinner at sunset. |
